Abstract: The present disclosure provides a Hexagonal optical intelligent reflecting surface system (100) for non-line-of-sight optical wireless communication. The system comprises a Hexagonal optical intelligent reflecting (OIRS) apparatus (102), a transmitter (110) and a receiver (112). The Hexagonal OIRS apparatus comprises a substrate (108) having a circular configuration. The apparatus comprises a plurality of hexagonal reflecting elements (104) disposed on the substrate in a circular grid pattern (106), thereby forming one or more concentric rings. Each hexagonal reflecting element of the plurality of hexagonal reflecting elements is configured to reflect an incident optical signal toward the receiver. The circular grid pattern aligns with a circular or elliptical illumination footprint produced by an optical source on hexagonal reflecting surfaces. The hexagonal reflecting elements provide higher tessellation efficiency compared to square or circular element configurations, enabling accommodation of a larger number of reflecting elements within a given total reflecting aperture area.
