Abstract: A heat-flux-adaptive, self-regulating passive thermal protection system for hypersonic vehicles is disclosed. The system comprises an outer thermal protection skin (10) incorporating a plurality of dual-conical microports (30), a structural backing plate (70), an internal vapor chamber (40), and a phase-change thermal reservoir (50) containing a phase-change core material (52). Localized aerodynamic heating (20) drives vapor generation (42) within the thermal reservoir (50) to build an internal pressure that discharges an evaporated gas (54) through the dual-conical microports (30). The discharged gas establishes a localized vapor boundary-layer shield (56) flush with the external aerodynamic surface, reducing convective thermal loading. The dual-conical microports (30) and the thermal reservoir (50) function as a coupled, passive thermodynamic control loop that autonomously adapts cooling mass flow rates to localized heat-flux fluctuations across the vehicle mold line without requiring external pumps, valves, sensors, or electronic control hardware.
