Abstract: Abstract: The invention consists of a custom application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) for hardware-assisted triangulation paired with an Active Infrared (IR) Beacon System for ultra-low latency mobile robotic platforms to detect attacks and change evasive maneuvers. Mobile robotic systems possess a cognitive architecture wherein a sensing hardware platform is paired with application software to enable the architecture to process the obtained data. Systems that require data processing and triangulation with their associated real-time systems bounding multiple geometry operations do so in a data-serial fashion resulting in low system processing speeds. The contribution of the present work is to eliminate the software bottleneck which takes to the form of application software and substitutes a single triangulation ASIC which is capable of processing the data in real-time and with the geometry associated with the data obtained from the incoming hardware IR system. The system comprises modulated active IR beacons and high-speed photodiodes which are positioned uniformly around the device. The beacons provide the system with a consistent set of spatial reference points and the triangulation chip is able to perform parallel hardware signal sampling and time-of-arrival measurements along with vector calculations to ,,provide a system estimate of threat direction, target hit angle, and threat velocity to within the microsecond. The chip sends information regarding the potential danger in real time to the control unit of the robot so that the system can activate the appropriate countermeasures without delay. The system also offers 360- degree sight, IR beacons that have the ability to vary their signal to circumvent jamming, and the multiple fusion of sensors to ensure precise results in noisy environments or low visibility. This creation offers a very reliable sensing system with minimal power consumption and the highest level of certainty required for mobile systems in a range of fields with increased demand for robotic danger recognition and situational awareness. The system has a wide range of applications in defense, autonomous mobile platform navigation, and mobile platforms for various essential industrial activities.
