MUMBAI, India, July 7 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641076484 A) filed by Amit Kumar Roy; and Elizabeth Anthony on June 20, 2026, for Handover Authentication Protocol With Sdn-Based Scheme For Edge Computing Nodes In Cyber-Physical Systems.
Inventors include Amit Kumar Roy; and Elizabeth Anthony.
The application for the patent was published on July 03, 2026, under issue no. 27/2026.
Abstract: The present invention relates to secure authentication and mobility management in Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) utilizing Software- Defined Networking (SDN) and edge computing. The invention provides an efficient handover authentication protocol for edge computing nodes that enables secure and low-latency authentication during node mobility across network domains. The scheme employs an SDN controller to centrally manage authentication credentials, session parameters, and handover decisions, thereby reducing signalling (handshake) overhead and authentication delay. During handover, the protocol establishes mutual authentication between the mobile edge node, SDN controller, and target edge server through lightweight cryptographic operations and secure key update mechanisms. The invention ensures confidentiality, integrity, forward secrecy, and resistance against impersonation, replay, man-in-the-middle, and session hijacking attacks. By minimizing computational and communication costs, the protocol enhances network efficiency, service continuity, and security in real-time CPS applications such as smart grids, industrial automation, intelligent transportation systems, and Internet of Things (IoT) environments. Formal verification using BAN logic and AVISPA tool confirms that the invention offers mutual authentication, ensures secret key confidentiality, and offers strong resistance to attacks. Simulation results demonstrate that present invention requires less computation cost and communication cost. The effectiveness of the invention is further validated through implementation using the NS-3 simulation platform.
