Abstract: ABSTRACT The present disclosure relates to handheld medication identification and drug interaction assessment. The handheld apparatus (100) includes an image capturing device (102) that applies a preprocessing pipeline to captured medication image data, normalizing exposure variations and enhancing spatial frequency components to generate a preprocessed image. An artificial neural network (104) with a dedicated inference accelerator circuit executes on-device inference, generating classification probabilities for multiple medication types. A microcontroller (110) converts the preprocessed image to a reduced-precision integer format and transfers the preprocessed image to the artificial neural network (104). The microcontroller (110) determines a medication type from the resulting classification probabilities, stores a corresponding drug identifier in a session data register, and queries an on-device interaction knowledge graph (208). A trained graph-based inference circuit (108) processes retrieved interaction edges alongside patient-specific parameters from a touchscreen display (112) to generate an adjusted severity value, enabling point-of-use medication safety decisions.
