Abstract: Embodiments herein disclose a synthetic guanidinium-derived compound (Gua-Cu-3) for modulating copper-induced toxicity comprising a guanidinium-based scaffold functionalized with at least one guanidinium functional group capable of electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding, at least one copper-binding moiety configured to chelate and coordinate Cu(I) and/or Cu(II) ions and a phenolic moiety enabling controlled redox modulation of copper. In particular, the guanidinium-derived compound (Gua-Cu-3) is configured to selectively coordinate copper ions with a moderate binding affinity and modulate copper-induced redox activity. Further, the compound forms supramolecular nanosheet assemblies exhibiting a positively charged surface potential.
