Abstract: The present invention relates to a green synthesis process for preparing phytochemical-functionalized magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles using an aqueous extract of wild Launaea procumbens as a natural source of phytochemical reducing, capping, and stabilizing agents. The resulting nanoparticles possess a surface coating of plant-derived phytochemicals, exhibit substantially spherical to quasi-spherical morphology, an average particle size of about 20–50 nm, and mesoporous characteristics. The invention further provides a process for preparing the nanoparticles under mild alkaline conditions and environmentally benign reaction parameters. The nanoparticles exhibit enhanced acid-neutralizing capacity and sustained buffering performance under simulated gastric conditions. The invention also provides pharmaceutical and nutraceutical compositions comprising the nanoparticles for acid-neutralizing applications. The process is economical, scalable, and environmentally sustainable.
