Abstract: ABSTRACT [0016] The present invention relates to a green and environmentally benign method for preparing novel nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) that enable highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production from water under visible light. Nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots are synthesized through a simple one-step hydrothermal process that employs readily available natural carbon precursors together with a nitrogen source under mild aqueous conditions, without the need for toxic organic solvents or high-energy equipment. The resulting N-CQDs exhibit strong visible-light absorption, efficient charge separation, and excellent photostability. When these N-CQDs are combined with a suitable semiconductor support, the hybrid system achieves markedly higher hydrogen evolution rates than undoped carbon quantum dots or the bare semiconductor alone. The process is scalable, low-cost, and free from hazardous reagents, making it suitable for sustainable solar-to-hydrogen conversion. Characterization confirms uniform particle size, successful nitrogen incorporation into the carbon lattice, and improved charge-transfer properties that directly translate into superior photocatalytic performance. The invention therefore provides a practical and green route to high-performance photocatalysts for clean hydrogen generation.
