Abstract: ABSTRACT Phenolic compounds are major pollutants in industrial wastewater because they are very toxic, stay in the environment for a long time, and can build up in aquatic ecosystems. Conventional treatment methods, such as chemical oxidation, solvent extraction, and activated carbon adsorption, while effective, often involve high costs, secondary pollution, or limited regeneration efficiency. Recently, biochar made from seed waste and deep eutectic solvents (DES) has become a more sustainable option. Seed-derived biochar has a lot of surface area and pores, while DES, especially choline chloride: glycerol (ChC!: Urea), adds polar functional groups that help phenol stick to it better. This review summarises the preparation, characterisation; and adsorption performance of seed biochar impregnated with DES. The methodology encompasses (i) the preparation ofbiochar from renewable seed feedstocks, (ii) the synthesis of DES, (iii) the impregnation of biochar with DES, and (iv) a thorough physicochemical characterisation utilising FTIR and SEM-EDS. Batch adsorption experiments, encompassing kinetics and isotherm analyses, demonstrate a markedly enhanced phenol removal efficiency for DES-modified biochar.
