MUMBAI, India, Aug. 17 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202511007360 A) filed by Amity University on January 29, 2025, for Gravity Battery System Integrated With Traction Elevators For Energy Storage.

Inventors include Pratham Gupta; and Priyanka Singh.

The application for the patent was published on August 14, 2026, under issue no. 33/2026.

Abstract: The present invention discloses a gravity battery system integrated with a traction elevator for energy storage and generation in multistorey buildings. The system comprises an elevator cabin (1) guided along rails (5) and counterbalanced by a counterweight (2), driven by a traction motor 5 (3) through a traction pulley (4). A gravity battery belt system (6) having weight bearing rods (7) carries circular gravity weight discs (8), which are lifted during elevator operation to store gravitational potential energy. Floor-level weight pickup structures (9) with actuators and sensors (10) enable automated loading and unloading of the weight discs. A gear 10 transmission system (12) ensures unidirectional movement of the belt system irrespective of elevator direction. Stored weights are accumulated in an upper floor storage shaft (11) and are allowed to descend in a controlled manner to drive a generator (18) for electrical energy generation. The invention enables efficient energy recovery from routine 15 elevator operation.
