Abstract: ABSTRACT The present invention relates to a graphene-based nanocomposite for advanced water purification. The nanocomposite comprises a graphene-based support, preferably graphene oxide or reduced graphene oxide, functionalized with one or more nanoparticles selected from metal oxides, magnetic nanoparticles, photocatalytic materials, antimicrobial materials, and combinations thereof. The graphene-based support provides a high-surface-area platform with chemically active functional groups for adsorption and surface complexation, while the functional nanoparticles provide additional catalytic, photocatalytic, magnetic, and/or antimicrobial functionality. In a preferred embodiment, magnetic iron oxide and a photocatalytic metal oxide are integrated with graphene oxide to provide a multifunctional purification material capable of removing heavy metals and organic contaminants. The nanocomposite may be configured as a powder, granule, pellet, membrane, coating, bead, aerogel, or porous monolithic structure. The material can be employed in batch treatment, fixed-bed columns, membrane systems, cartridges, and continuous-flow purification systems. Magnetic functionality enables recovery of the material from treated water, while photocatalytic functionality enables degradation of persistent organic pollutants. The nanocomposite can further be regenerated and reused, thereby providing a versatile and potentially scalable platform for advanced treatment of drinking water, municipal wastewater, industrial wastewater, groundwater, and contaminated surface water.
