Abstract: Turn indicators are critical safety devices that enable drivers to communicate their intentions to turn, change lanes, or merge, thereby reducing the risk of collisions. Proper and timely use of indicators plays a significant role in preventing common accidents such as side-impact, rear-end, and intersection crashes. Road accident statistics worldwide and particularly in India highlight the persistent challenges in traffic safety, with a substantial proportion of crashes linked to inadequate communication during directional movements. Proper use of turn signals can prevent various types of accidents, including side collisions, rear-end collisions, intersection accidents, and merging accidents. Responsible drivers use turn signals to communicate their intentions clearly to other drivers and pedestrians at the appropriate time. Indicators should be activated early, ideally 3 to 5 seconds before a manoeuvre, or at least 100 feet before making a turn. On highways, signals should be given several hundred feet in advance when changing lanes or merging, with timing adjusted according to traffic conditions to ensure maximum safety. With the growing reliance on GPS-based navigation, drivers receive advance information about upcoming turns, exits, and junctions. However, this information is typically limited to visual or audio cues and is not integrated with vehicle signalling systems, creating a gap between navigation data and actual vehicle behaviour. The proposed invention addresses this gap by introducing a GPS-based smart turn indicator system that utilizes real-time navigation inputs to automatically activate turn signals prior to a driver’s intended manoeuvre. By providing timely and accurate signalling, the system allows other road users sufficient time to respond, maintain safe distances, and avoid potential collisions. This innovation enhances communication on the road and significantly reduces accidents caused by delayed or missed signalling.
