Abstract: The present invention pertains to a nanocluster having a core-shell architecture, comprising: a) a gold core comprising a plurality of gold atoms; and b) a ligand shell comprising a plurality of chiral aromatic ligands, wherein ligand shell is coated around the gold core and each chiral aromatic ligand is bonded to a surface of gold atoms of the gold core. In particular, the invention relates to novel gold nanoclusters with improved electrochemical properties. Additionally, the invention encompasses a method for synthesizing these nanoclusters and their incorporation as electrocatalyst into an electrochemical water spliting process used for hydrogen production.
