Abstract: ABSTRACT Limited mobility can significantly reduce independent movement, causing many individuals to depend on mobility aids in homes and care facilities. Conventional joystick-controlled powered wheelchairs may be difficult to operate for users with tremors, spasticity, or insufficient motor strength. This paper presents a prototype of a smartphone gesture-controlled wheelchair that uses a smartphone as the primary user interface. The smartphone’s accelerometer detects its tilt in different directions and converts the detected movements into five commands: forward, backward, left, right, and stop. These commands are transmitted wirelessly to a controller, which processes them and drives the wheelchair motors through an H-bridge motor controller to produce the required movement. A three-wheel vehicle prototype was developed to demonstrate the proposed concept and was tested using all five commands. The wireless communication link operated successfully over an indoor distance of approximately 8–10 meters. The modular system is designed to fail safely by powering off when no command is received. The proposed prototype also provides a foundation for future integration of obstacle detection, voice control, and Internet of Things based caretaker monitoring for enhanced user safety.
