Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on a computer storage medium, for generating synthetic datasets. In one aspect, a method includes receiving, from a data consumer, a dataset and one or more patterns. Each pattern defines statistical information characterizing at least a portion of data in the dataset. A search space that includes a set of candidate patterns is identified based on the dataset. A selection is made, using the dataset and the one or more patterns, from the set of candidate patterns, a proper subset of the candidate patterns to be used in generating a synthetic dataset. A differentially private synthetic dataset is generated based on the subset of patterns.
