The application for the patent was published on September 11, 2026, under issue no. 37/2026.
Abstract: The traditional approach to reading autobiographical narratives, such as life writing and memoirs, is generally treated as narrative nonfiction, focusing on storyline, thematic evaluation, character arc, memory and musing, narrative technique, self-construction, the question of subjectivity, and how memory functions in the crafting of narratives. However, institutional memoirs cater to far more than familiar emotional palettes and conventional rubrics of human experience, because the institution interpellates its power, which is voiced through individual experience and acts as an agent of collective memory formation. The proposed framework is configured for effective reading of institutional memoirs and related forms of life writing authored by state, bureaucratic, para-state, military, medico-legal, carceral, and other organisational actors. The hourglass model (inductive-deductive-inductive) integrates three coordinated analytical components as follows: genealogical history and politics of emergence and descent, analysis of organisational subcultures, followed by interrogation of autobiographical authority, memory, narration, and canonisation. The model is designed to address a methodological deficiency in conventional life writing approaches, the insufficient treatment of institutional power and the constitutive roles of race, ethnicity, caste, class, and gender in determining who becomes a narratable subject and how such narration gains legitimacy. In one implementation, the model is applied to Indian police memoirs; in subsequent implementations, it is transferable to broader corpora of institutional life writing.
