Abstract: ABSTRACT GAS-HAZARD CLASSIFICATION AND MITIGATION SYSTEM USING FAN COAST-DOWN DENSITOMETRY A gas-hazard detection and mitigation system includes a fan (101) ventilating an enclosed space, a fan drive (401), a tachometer (102), an environmental sensor (104) measuring temperature, relative humidity and pressure, a chemoresistive gas sensor (105), a vent (402) and a controller (110). The controller (110) causes the fan drive (401) to remove drive for a free coast-down, fits revolution-timing data from the tachometer (102) to a rotor model having speed-independent friction, viscous friction and aerodynamic terms, derives a gas density estimate from the aerodynamic term, and forms a signed density residual against a thermodynamic reference density computed from the measured temperature, relative humidity and pressure. The controller (110) assigns a hazard class based on the signed density residual and a chemoresistive response of the chemoresistive gas sensor (105), and controls the fan drive (401) and the vent (402) accordingly, holding the fan (101) unpowered for a combustible class.
