MUMBAI, India, Sept. 14 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641107609 A) filed by Sri Eshwar College Of Engineering on September 07, 2026, for Gait Phase Adaptive Multi Zone Piezoelectricity Energy Harvesting System For Smart Footwear.
Inventors include Mr. S. Gowtham; and Rohith R.
The application for the patent was published on September 11, 2026, under issue no. 37/2026.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a gait-phase adaptive multi-zone piezoelectric energy harvesting system for smart footwear, developed to provide a compact and sustainable source of electrical energy from human walking motion. The system comprises a plurality of piezoelectric energy harvesting elements positioned in different pressure zones of a footwear sole, particularly the heel and forefoot regions, wherein mechanical pressure generated during walking deforms the piezoelectric elements and produces electrical energy. The generated electrical output is supplied through respective electrical conditioning paths comprising rectification and filtering arrangements and is directed towards an energy storage unit. A motion sensing unit and controller are integrated with the footwear to detect acceleration, orientation and temporal characteristics of the user's gait cycle. The controller identifies different gait phases including heel strike, weight transfer, mid-stance, forefoot loading and toe- off and selectively enables, isolates or combines the corresponding piezoelectric harvesting zones according to the detected gait phase. The adaptive electrical routing configuration enables the harvesting system to respond to changing mechanical loading conditions rather than maintaining a fixed electrical connection between all harvesting elements. The stored electrical energy may be utilized for powering the controller, motion sensors and other low-power wearable electronic devices. The invention provides an integrated footwear platform for adaptive mechanical energy harvesting and gait monitoring, with potential applications in self-powered wearable electronics, fitness monitoring, rehabilitation, healthcare monitoring and other low-power wearable applications.
