Abstract: Disclosed herein is an energy harvesting device configured to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy for charging sensor batteries and powering low-power electronic equipment commonly used in autonomous sensing and monitoring systems. The device includes a bridge-shaped metallic top end cap (100) and an oppositely disposed bridge-shaped metallic bottom end cap (200), between which an auxetic substrate (300) having a re-entrant auxetic metamaterial structure (302) is positioned. A piezoelectric layer (400) is coupled to the auxetic substrate (300) such that mechanical loads applied to the end caps induce deformation and strain amplification within the auxetic metamaterial structure (302), thereby generating electrical energy in the piezoelectric layer (400). The auxetic metamaterial structure (302) comprises interconnected auxetic unit cells (302a) formed from a steel-polyether ether ketone (S-PEEK) composite and arranged in a functionally graded configuration according to a Gaussian distribution of geometrical parameters and material compositions. The resulting non-uniform strain distribution enhances strain transfer to the piezoelectric layer, improving energy conversion efficiency. A power management circuit (600) rectifies, regulates, and supplies the harvested electrical energy to a sensor battery (700). Fig. 1
