Abstract: ABSTRACT [0023] The invention focuses on the formulation and evaluation of mucoadhesive microspheres of oxcarbazepine using sodium alginate, HPMC K4M, and Carbopol 934 to enhance gastric residence time and provide controlled drug release. Microspheres were prepared by the ionic gelation method, where sodium alginate acted as the primary polymer for gel formation, while HPMC K4M and Carbopol 934 contributed to sustained release and mucoadhesion. The prepared formulations were evaluated for particle size, percentage yield, drug content, entrapment efficiency, swelling index, and in-vitro drug release. Results indicated that increasing polymer concentration improved entrapment efficiency and mucoadhesive properties, while providing prolonged drug release. The optimized formulation showed satisfactory physicochemical characteristics and sustained release behavior over an extended period. Overall, the study demonstrates that mucoadhesive microspheres of oxcarbazepine can be a promising approach for improving therapeutic efficacy, reducing dosing frequency, and enhancing patient compliance in the management of epilepsy.
