MUMBAI, India, Sept. 14 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611087032 A) filed by Dr Simanchal Panda; Ankita Kumari; and Sheetal Sarraf on July 16, 2026, for Formulation And Evaluation Of Fenugreek Seed Mucilage-Based Natural Polymer Fisetin Sustained Release Tablets.
Inventors include Dr Simanchal Panda; Ankita Kumari; and Sheetal Sarraf.
The application for the patent was published on September 11, 2026, under issue no. 37/2026.
Abstract: The present invention relates to the formulation and evaluation of sustained release oral tablets of fisetin using fenugreek seed mucilage as a natural polymeric matrix former. Fisetin, a bioactive flavonoid with significant antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and anticancer properties, suffers from poor aqueous solubility and rapid systemic elimination, thereby limiting its therapeutic efficacy. The invention provides a novel, biocompatible, and biodegradable sustained release drug delivery system utilizing fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) seed mucilage as a hydrophilic matrix polymer to modulate drug release over an extended period. The mucilage is extracted, purified, and characterized for physicochemical properties before incorporation into tablet formulations prepared by wet granulation or direct compression techniques. Various formulations containing different concentrations of fenugreek mucilage are evaluated for pre-compression and post-compression parameters including flow properties, hardness, friability, drug content uniformity, swelling index, and in vitro drug release profiles. The optimized formulation demonstrates controlled drug release up to 12–24 hours following diffusion and polymer relaxation mechanisms. Kinetic modeling confirms adherence to Higuchi and Korsmeyer–Peppas models, indicating anomalous transport. The developed system enhances bioavailability, reduces dosing frequency, improves patient compliance, and minimizes synthetic polymer dependency. The invention highlights the potential of fenugreek seed mucilage as a cost-effective, eco-friendly, and sustainable natural polymer for oral sustained release formulations of poorly soluble phytoconstituents such as fisetin.
