MUMBAI, India, July 24 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641084765 A) filed by Mohan Babu University on July 10, 2026, for Fire-Resistant Hybrid Composite Electrical Conduit Pipe Reinforced With Natural Fibers And Sugarcane Biochar.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a fire-resistant hybrid composite electrical conduit pipe reinforced with flax fibers, kenaf fibers, and sugarcane biochar as a sustainable alternative to conventional polyvinyl chloride (PVC) conduit pipes. The conduit pipe comprises an epoxy matrix reinforced with a Flax/Kenaf/Flax fiber arrangement and sugarcane biochar incorporated as a multifunctional reinforcing and fire-retardant filler. An optimized biochar loading of 4.5 wt.% provides improved mechanical and fire-retardant properties, exhibiting a tensile strength of 38.01 MPa, flexural strength of 76.12 MPa, impact strength of 9.62 kJ/m², and hardness of 86 Shore D. The composite further exhibits a Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) of 28.4% and a reduced Peak Heat Release Rate (PHRR) of approximately 300 kW/m², demonstrating enhanced fire resistance through the formation of a stable carbonaceous char layer. The invention provides a lightweight, durable, environmentally friendly, and fire-resistant electrical conduit pipe suitable for residential, commercial, and industrial applications.
