MUMBAI, India, Nov. 6 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202511033855 A) filed by Beejapuri Fresh Products Private Limited on April 07, 2025, for Field-Deployable Colorimetric Detection System For Identification Of Calcium Carbide In Agricultural Produce.
Inventors include Dr. Shankar Ashok Gaware; and Mr. Malkeet Singh.
The application for the patent was published on November 06, 2026, under issue no. 45/2026.
Abstract: The present invention discloses a field-deployable colorimetric detection system and method for the qualitative identification of calcium carbide induced artificial ripening in agricultural produce. The system comprises a porous, cellulose-based substrate, preferably Whatman filter paper, uniformly coated with a phenolphthalein reagent. The detection mechanism relies on the chemical reaction between the indicator and calcium hydroxide, the alkaline by-product formed when calcium carbide reacts with moisture. The method involves moistening the fruit surface, collecting residue with an absorbent material, and contacting it with the indicator strip. A distinct color change from substantially colorless to dark pink within one minute confirms the presence of artificial ripening agents. The system is non-destructive and validated to detect calcium carbide concentrations as low as 2% relative to the fruit weight. A portable kit including indicator strips, residue collection means, and instructions is also disclosed.
