Abstract: Plastic packaging from petroleum materials is widely used in the food industry but causes major environmental issues due to poor degradability. To address this, biodegradable alternatives are being explored that maintain food quality and safety. Chitosan and pectin, two natural biopolymers, are promising because they are eco- friendly, biocompatible, and film-forming. In this work, chitosan and pectin were combined to create a bio-composite film infused with Achyranthes aspera extract, a medicinal plant rich in antimicrobial compounds. Chitosan contributes antimicrobial activity and film formation, while pectin enhances flexibility and strength. The films, prepared by solution casting with glycerol as a plasticizer, were tested for mechanical, barrier, biodegradation, and antimicrobial properties. Incorporating Achyranthes aspera helps suppress spoilage microorganisms, improving food safety and extending shelf life. This study supports the development of sustainable packaging that reduces plastic dependence and promotes environmentally responsible food preservation.
