Inventors include Dr. K. Nagalakshmi; and Dr. D. S. Pushparani.

The application for the patent was published on June 19, 2026, under issue no. 25/2026.

Abstract: ABSTRACT The present study investigates the functional potential of Alternanthera sessilis extract in promoting gut health and mitigating oxidative stress. Adding a solvent mixture of 10% ethanol in sterile water, the extraction process involved maceration of the plant powder followed by filtration and freezedrying to retain bioactive compounds. Characterization of betacyanins revealed 10 molecular weights of 550 glmol, with significant antioxidant activity confirmed by a DPPH assay showing a radical scavenging capacity of up to 94.5%. Turbidometric and pH assays indicated robust prebiotic effects, facilitating enhanced growth and fermentation of probiotics comparable to inulin. These findings position A. sessilis as a promising natural source of prebiotics and 15 antioxidants for functional food and nutraceutical applications, underscoring its potential in supporting gut and overall health.
