Inventors include Dr. Ritu Madhan; and Ms. Ummesalma Boxwala.

The application for the patent was published on September 11, 2026, under issue no. 37/2026.

Abstract: Mastoid dressings are routinely applied following mastoidectomy to provide compression, protect the surgical site, minimize postoperative complications, and support wound healing. However, conventional mastoid dressings are often bulky, uncomfortable, time-consuming to apply, and may require assistance from multiple healthcare professionals. Additionally, their design offers limited accessibility for postoperative wound inspection and may not provide optimal anatomical fit or stability. The present design aims to design and develop an anatomically contoured textile-based mastoid dressing that addresses these limitations while improving patient comfort and ease of application. A design-based research approach was adopted, beginning with an extensive review of literature and consultation with otolaryngologists to identify the challenges associated with existing mastoid dressing techniques. Based on the identified clinical requirements, a lightweight prototype incorporating pre-shaped gauze layers, a detachable gauze cover, and an elastic support band was developed. The prototype was evaluated by ENT specialists using a structured feedback questionnaire to assess its functionality, comfort, ease of application, stability, and overall clinical suitability. The developed dressing received positive feedback for its improved anatomical fit, simplified application, enhanced wound accessibility, and potential to improve postoperative management compared with conventional mastoid dressings. The findings demonstrate that the application of medical textile principles can contribute to the development of innovative postoperative dressings that enhance clinical usability and patient comfort. The proposed mastoid dressing provides a promising alternative to conventional dressing techniques and offers potential for further refinement and clinical validation.
