Abstract: Enhancement of thermal span of nematic phase in the ternary liquid crystal systems is proposed. Two ternary liquid crystal systems are formed from Glutaric acid (GA), 4-Heptylbenzoic acid (7BA), 4-(Undecyloxy)benzoic acid (IIOBA) and 4-(Dodecyloxy)benzoic acid (120BA) abbreviated as 7BA:GA: II OBA and 7BA:GA: 120BA respectively. Mesophase observation, phase confirmation, determination of phase transition temperatures along with the enthalpy values are all elucidated from the optical and the thermal studies undertaken via Polarizing Optical Microscope and Differential Scanning Calorimetry studies respectively. The thermal range obtained by the nematic phase in ternary liquid crystals (7BA:GA: II OBA and 7BA:GA: 120BA) is compared with the thermal range obtained for the nematic phase in the binary liquid crystals (GA:IIOBA and GA:l20BA) achieved through the same dicarboxylic acid (GA) used as the rigid core. Bar chart of binary and ternary liquid crystal systems proves the enhancement of the thermal span.
