Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A user equipment (UE) may operate in a first state and to transmit, to a network entity, a request to transition from the first state to a second state based on data activity between the UE and the network entity. The UE may transition from the first state to the second state based on transmitting the request to the network entity. The UE may perform the state transition based on a configuration from the network entity. The network entity may configure the UE to autonomously transition states based on transmitting the request or may configure the UE to receive a response message from the network prior to transitioning states. The UE may request to transition to a particular state, which may be selected by the UE.
