Abstract: The present invention discloses an energy-efficient globally asynchronous locally synchronous microcontroller system and method thereof. The system comprises an instruction fetch unit, an instruction execution processor, a plurality of locally synchronous functional processing units, independent local clock generation circuits, an asynchronous communication unit, a shared memory unit, an instruction activity determination processor, an energy monitoring unit, a power gating controller, a synchronization processor, a peripheral interface unit, and a synthesis configuration unit. The instruction activity determination processor selectively activates functional processing units required for execution of a current instruction, while the corresponding local clock generation circuits generate clock pulses only for activated units. The asynchronous communication unit enables data transfer between independently clocked processing units using request and acknowledgement signals. The energy monitoring unit and power gating controller regulate power supplied to inactive functional processing units, and the shared memory unit coordinates asynchronous memory access. The disclosed architecture reduces switching activity, clock distribution power, leakage power, and electromagnetic interference while improving scalability, energy efficiency, and implementation flexibility.
