Abstract: An emission control system (10) for a compression ignition engine (12) includes a valve train mechanism (28) having a camshaft (30) with an intake cam (32) and an exhaust cam (34), each cam having a primary lobe (36, 40) and a secondary lobe (38, 42). The secondary lobe (42) of the exhaust cam (34) actuates an exhaust valve (22) for a secondary opening during an intake stroke, and the secondary lobe (38) of the intake cam (32) actuates an intake valve (20) for a secondary opening during an exhaust stroke, trapping exhaust gas within a combustion chamber (18) as a pressure-driven residual gas fraction based on pressure differentials between an intake manifold (24), an exhaust manifold (26), and the combustion chamber (18). A high-pressure common rail fuel injection system (44) delivers multi-phase injection events within a single combustion cycle. The electronic controller (52) configured to control the parameters, like injection strategy, number of injections, injection timing, duration, injection quantity, rail pressure and controls the combustion and heat release and combustion phasing.
