Abstract: The electrode for electrochemical cells which are designed to carry out electrolysis is a carrier which is formed with an open-pore metal structure and which is provided, on the outward-pointing surface facing a separator of an electrochemical cell, with a coating which increases the specific surface area or with a coating which increases the specific surface area and has increased catalytic activity. The coating is formed with a metal, of which the particles are integrally bonded to one another and to the surface of the open-pore metal structure via sintering bridges and/or an organic binder. The coating is formed with a plurality of regions, between each of which uncoated joints are arranged.
