MUMBAI, India, July 7 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202631072116 A) filed by C. V. Raman Global University on June 10, 2026, for Edge-Ai Enabled Data Reduction For Hyperspectral Environmental Survey Satellites.
Inventors include Debankur Pal; Asmita Agarwal; Debadutta Sahoo; Ramakant Senapati; and Dr. Soumya Mishra.
The application for the patent was published on July 03, 2026, under issue no. 27/2026.
Abstract: The present invention discloses an Edge-AI Enabled Data Reduction System for Hyperspectral Environmental Survey Satellites, designed to address the critical challenges of excessive data volume, limited downlink bandwidth, constrained power budgets, and real-time environmental monitoring requirements inherent in modern satellite missions. The invention integrates an onboard Edge-AI processing block between the hyperspectral imaging sensor and the communication module, comprising three functional sub-modules namely feature extraction, anomaly and event detection, and intelligent content- aware data compression, all implemented on radiation-hardened low-power hardware platforms including FPGAs, SoC devices, and AI accelerators. Raw hyperspectral data captured across hundreds of narrow spectral bands is preprocessed onboard for calibration and noise removal, then analyzed by machine learning models that identify environmentally significant spectral features, flag anomalies such as pollution plumes or disaster indicators, and selectively retain only mission-critical spectral bands and spatial regions for compression and transmission. The reduced dataset transmitted to the ground station is quantifiably smaller than raw acquisitions, improving the Data Reduction Ratio, Bandwidth Utilization, Power Consumption Efficiency, Processing Latency, and Spectral Feature Selection Efficiency, all formally defined within the invention. The architecture supports in-orbit model updates via secure command uplink and is scalable to higher- resolution sensors and multi-satellite constellation configurations, serving governmental space agencies, environmental monitoring organizations, disaster management authorities, commercial Earth observation operators, and research institutions.
