Abstract: A system for detecting living occupants, including children and pets, left unattended in a parked vehicle is disclosed. The system comprises a 60 GHz millimeter-wave radar sensor mounted in the vehicle cabin, a microcontroller executing an embedded machine-learning model, and an IoT communication module. The radar captures reflected signals from which micro-Doppler patterns corresponding to respiration and cardiac activity are extracted without physical contact or cameras. The model processes these vital-sign features to distinguish living occupants from inanimate objects and human occupants from pets, thereby reducing false alarms. Upon confirming occupant presence with the driver absent, the system triggers a local response and transmits real-time alerts to a user device and emergency contacts, with escalation determined by a preset duration threshold. The system preserves privacy, operates with low latency at the edge, and is suitable for compact, low-cost automotive integration.
