Abstract: An edge artificial-intelligence-based traffic signal control system and method for energy-efficient cities is disclosed. At a road intersection, one or more sensors, comprising a camera, sense a traffic condition, and an edge-computing device located at the intersection processes the sensed condition locally by means of a trained machine-learning model so as to determine a traffic state, comprising the number, position, and movement of vehicles upon each approach and the length of each queue, and computes an adapted signal timing that reduces vehicle stopping and idling. A signal-control interface applies the adapted timing to the traffic signal. Because the perception and the control decision are performed locally at the edge, the adaptation is achieved with low latency and without transmitting the large volume of video data or depending upon continuous communication with a remote resource, which conserves bandwidth and energy and is robust to interruption of connectivity. The signal timing may be computed by an optimization or a reinforcement-learning agent executed at the edge, neighbouring intersections may be coordinated by exchanging compact information, and priority may be given to emergency or public-transport vehicles and pedestrians. By minimizing unnecessary stopping and idling, the system reduces the fuel and energy consumption and the emissions of urban road traffic, contributing to an energy-efficient city.
