Abstract: A novel intelligent edge-computing based environmental monitoring and autonomous decision support system is disclosed for real-time environmental assessment, predictive risk analysis and sustainable infrastructure management. The system includes a self-powered portable hardware platform equipped with multiple heterogeneous environmental sensing modules such as air quality sensors, Particulate Matter (PM2.5, PM10), CO2 sensors, temperature sensors, humidity sensors, gas leak sensors, flame sensors, noise sensors, water quality sensors, soil moisture sensors, GPS sensors and camera sensors, operatively connected to an embedded edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) computing unit. Environmental sensor data acquired by these sensors through a multi-modal sensor fusion engine, computer vision models and light Machine Learning (ML) algorithms are processed on-board at the edge in real-time without requiring a continuous connection to a remote cloud server to detect, classify and predict potential hazards in the environment. A Context-Aware Autonomous Decision Engine (CADE) is implemented which intelligently assesses the prevailing environmental conditions by integrating real-time observations from diverse environmental sensors with a range of data factors, such as temporal and geographical contexts, human activity information, occupancy detection, environmental hazard profiles and configured risk thresholds, to derive risk events and associated recommendations. An Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) assistant service facilitates the translation of analytical results into easily comprehensible notifications, audio prompts and preventive actions. The integrated platform is also equipped with an energy-efficient selfsustaining operational design including a solar power harvesting unit and rechargeable batteries. The system has a versatile communication subsystem that enables wireless data transmission throughWi-Fi, LoRa, cellular or other communication technologies to support remote monitoring and cloud data synchronization. The invention provides an energy-efficient, intelligent, adaptable and self-contained hardware solution to autonomously monitor the environmental conditions, conduct real-time risk prediction and make intelligent decisions to promote safety and environmental sustainability in applications such as smart city monitoring, industrial automation, academic campus, agriculture, climate change mitigation and natural disaster management.
