MUMBAI, India, Sept. 22 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641108443 A) filed by Vels Institute Of Science, Technology And Advanced Studies Vistas on September 09, 2026, for Eco-Friendly Marine Antifouling Composition From Halimeda Gracilis Extracts For Controlling Biofilm-Forming Bacterial Growth.

Inventors include D. Yuvaraj; J. Shamitha; and S. Bragadeeswaran.

The application for the patent was published on September 18, 2026, under issue no. 38/2026.

Abstract: Disclosed is a marine antifouling composition for inhibiting formation of a marine biofilm on a submerged surface. The composition comprises a semi-polar bioactive extract obtained from cleaned, shade-dried, and powdered Halimeda gracilis through solvent extraction using ethyl acetate, and a marine-compatible coating matrix. The coating matrix comprises a polymer matrix, a marine paint system, or a biodegradable marine coating formulation, with the semi-polar bioactive extract dispersed therein. The bioactive extract inhibits attachment and growth of marine biofilm-forming bacteria comprising one or more of Vibrio species, Pseudomonas species, Staphylococcus species, and Escherichia coli on the submerged surface. Accordingly, the composition restricts initiation and development of bacterial biofilms on marine-exposed surfaces. The composition provides a naturally derived and environmentally sustainable antifouling alternative suitable for ship hulls, submerged panels, aquaculture equipment, underwater sensors, and marine structures, without reliance on tributyltin-based or copper-based antifouling biocides, and thereby reduces ecological toxicity associated with conventional coatings.
