The application for the patent was published on September 25, 2026, under issue no. 39/2026.
Abstract: The present invention discloses an eco-friendly dyeing composition and a sustainable natural dye extraction method using leaves of Portulacaria afra. The invention discloses an alkaline extraction process wherein washed and crushed Portulacaria afra leaves are subjected to dye extraction using potassium hydroxide and 70% ethanol under controlled temperature conditions of 45–55°C to obtain a stable, non-toxic, and biodegradable natural dye. The extracted dye is applied to a textile substrate, optionally after mordanting with pomegranate rind or ferrous sulfate, resulting in reproducible and stable color shades. The disclosed composition and method minimize the use of harmful chemicals, reduce waste generation, and provide an environmentally safe and cost-effective alternative to synthetic dyes. The invention is scalable and suitable for textile dyeing applications, thereby promoting sustainable and environmentally responsible dyeing practices.
