MUMBAI, India, July 7 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641078023 A) filed by Dr. S. Chaitanya Kumari; and Ms. Vanamala Sunitha on June 24, 2026, for Eco-Friendly Bioplastic Production From Agricultural Biowaste And Green Synthesized Silver Nanoparticle Coated Antimicrobial Bioplastic.

Inventors include Dr. S. Chaitanya Kumari; and Ms. Vanamala Sunitha.

The application for the patent was published on July 03, 2026, under issue no. 27/2026.

Abstract: Abstract The present invention discloses an integrated eco-friendly process for producing biodegradable antimicrobial bioplastic from agricultural biowaste. Bioplastic films were produced from banana peel, sugarcane bagasse, orange peel, and watermelon rind using glycerol and sorbitol as plasticizers through an alkali-free, non-polluting process. Concurrently, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized by a green method using banana stem aqueous extract as both reducing and stabilizing agent, reacting with silver nitrate solution at room temperature for 24 hours. Nanoparticle formation was confirmed by characteristic brown coloration and UV-Vis absorption peak at 450 nm, with maximum synthesis at 5 mM AgNO3 (OD = 1.34). AgNPs were coated onto the bioplastic surface in multiple layers. Quality testing confirmed biodegradability ( 80% weight loss within 10 days), insolubility in most organic solvents, and structural stability in aqueous media. Antimicrobial activity was demonstrated against Staphylococcus sp., Bacillus sp., Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas sp., and Klebsiella sp., with maximum zones of inhibition of 1.4 cm and 0.6 cm for Staphylococcus and Bacillus respectively. The developed product constitutes a sustainable, biodegradable, and antimicrobially active alternative to petroleum-based packaging materials.
