MUMBAI, India, Aug. 12 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641082803 A) filed by Saveetha Institute Of Medical And Technical Sciences on July 06, 2026, for Dynamic Gait Adjusting Afo With Gyroscope Feedback.
Inventors include Sachin P. V; Dr Suji; and Dr Ramya Mohan.
The application for the patent was published on August 07, 2026, under issue no. 32/2026.
Abstract: The present invention relates to an adaptive Ankle-Foot Orthosis (AFO) system that dynamically adjusts mechanical support and joint resistance during walking by using gyroscope/IMU feedback and a closed-loop control system. The system continuously senses ankle and foot angular velocity and orientation using gyroscopes and inertial measurement units (IMUs), processes the signals with an embedded microcontroller running a gait-phase detection and control algorithm, and commands actuators (electromechanical or variable-stiffness elements) to alter dorsiflexion/plantarflexion assistance in real time. The device improves gait symmetry, reduces foot-drop and tripping risk, and adapts to walking speed, inclines, and perturbations while maintaining user safety through mechanical stops, fail-safe passive modes, and low-power operation. The AFO is lightweight, anatomically contoured, and suitable for rehabilitation and daily wearable use.
