Abstract: Disclosed is a two-way assistive communication system having a terminal housing with opposing first and second user sides. A gesture-capture frame projects from the first user side and delimits a gesture-capture volume viewed by a camera supported by the housing. An acoustic input aperture faces the second user side and conveys speech to a microphone. A first visual output faces the first user side, and an acoustic output transducer faces the second user side. A processing assembly coupled to the camera, microphone, first visual output, and acoustic output transducer converts gestures captured in the gesture-capture volume into text and directs corresponding audible speech toward the second user side. Independently, the processing assembly converts speech received from the second user side into text and presents the text through the first visual output toward the first user side.
