Abstract: Automotive disc brake systems require periodic inspection and replacement of brake pads because the friction material undergoes progressive wear during vehicle operation. Conventional brake-pad replacement arrangements commonly employ retaining pins, clips, springs, bolts, or other fastening elements and access to these components may require tools or partial disassembly of the brake assembly. Existing systems have addressed simplified brake-pad installation and removal; however, reliable retention during braking and convenient intentional release during servicing remain important design considerations. The present invention proposes a Dual- Stage Fail-Safe Tool-Less Quick-Release Brake Pad Retention Mechanism for automotive disc brakes. The mechanism comprises a primary load-bearing retaining member, a secondary safety-locking member, a manually accessible release arrangement, a spring-assisted return mechanism and brake-pad positioning and anti-rattle features. The primary retaining member is configured to withstand the mechanical forces associated with brake-pad operation, while the secondary locking member prevents unintended movement of the primary retaining member under vibration and dynamic operating conditions. The brake pad can be intentionally released through a predetermined two-stage manual sequence. In a first stage, the secondary safety lock is disengaged. In a second stage, the primary retaining member is moved to its release position, allowing the worn brake pad to be removed without conventional hand tools. Following insertion of a replacement brake pad, the retaining mechanism is configured to return toward the locked condition and engage the brake pad in its predetermined position. The invention is intended to simplify brake-pad replacement while maintaining secure retention, controlled pad positioning, vibration resistance and fail-safe operation. The proposed mechanism can be developed using conventional engineering materials and manufacturing processes and can be evaluated through CAD modelling, finite element analysis, prototype testing, retention-load testing, vibration testing and thermal evaluation.
