Abstract: ABSTRACT: The present invention relates to a dual-responsive smart freslmess label designed for real-time monitoring of food spoilage. The label integrates two chemically active sensing zones within a machine-readable QR matrix, enabling simultaneous detection of acidic and alkaline volatile compounds produced during different stages of food deterioration. Zone A, positioned at the top-left of the QR code, is printed with anthocyanin-ZnO pH-indicator ink, responding to acidic vapours generated in early spoilage. Zone B, at the bottom-right, contains curcumin nanocrystal ink for detecting alkaline gases such as ammonia released during advanced spoilage. The sensing inks are deposited on a biodegradable PLA substrate with a surface-treated layer to enhance adhesion, while the central QRmatrix ensures digital data encoding. Upon scanning with a smartphone, a web-based processing system analyses the colour changes in the sensing zones and provides an immediate freslmess assessment. The label offers a safe, eco-friendly, and non-destructive method for continuous food quality monitoring.
