Abstract: Abstract Dual-Reinforced Sequentially Crosslinked Alginate-Chitosan Bioleather Composite A hide-free flexible sheet composite and method of manufacture are disclosed. The composite comprises an alginate-chitosan matrix plasticized with glycerol, dispersed alkali-treated ramie fibres providing discontinuous microscale reinforcement, and an open-weave gauze fabric providing continuous macroscale reinforcement. The fibre-containing matrix is impregnated into the gauze fabric and dried to form a self-supporting sheet. The sheet is sequentially stabilized by calcium-ion crosslinking of the alginate-containing bulk followed by treatment with a chitosan-sodium tripolyphosphate solution to form an additional crosslinked surface region. In a representative embodiment, the dual-reinforced composite exhibits an ultimate tensile load of about 111.07 N and an elongation at break of about 33.92%. The composite provides a flexible, hide-free material suitable for leather-substitute articles, coverings, laminates and related applications.
