MUMBAI, India, Sept. 7 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611083901 A) filed by Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University on July 08, 2026, for Dual-Indicator Culture Plate For Identifying L-Asparaginase-Producing Microbial Strains.

Inventors include Pramod K. Yadav; Aparna Shukla; and Kunwar Vishal.

The application for the patent was published on September 04, 2026, under issue no. 36/2026.

Abstract: Disclosed is a screening plate for identifying an L-asparaginase-producing microbial strain. The screening plate comprises a sterile culture plate containing a solidified Modified Czapek Dox Agar (MCDA) medium comprising L-asparagine as a sole nitrogen source, phenol red at a concentration of 0.009%, bromothymol blue (BTB) at a concentration of 0.007%, agar and mineral salts supporting growth of the microbial strain. The phenol red and the BTB are concurrently dispersed in the same MCDA medium having an initial pH of 5.5. Upon growth of an L-asparaginase-producing microbial colony, hydrolysis of L-asparagine releases ammonia and increases local alkalinity in the surrounding medium. The concurrently dispersed indicators respond to the local alkalinity by producing a dark pink-to-purple colour zone around the colony, thereby enabling visual identification of microbial strains producing L-asparaginase.
