Abstract: An IoT-enabled real-time driver drowsiness detection and alert system is disclosed for monitoring a driver's alertness during operation of a vehicle. The system comprises a driver monitoring subsystem configured to acquire one or more physiological and/or behavioral parameters associated with the driver, a processing subsystem configured to process the acquired parameters and determine an alertness condition, and a drowsiness determination module configured to identify a drowsiness condition. The monitored parameters may include eye blinking, eye closure duration, head movement, heart rate and/or steering-related behavior. Upon identification of drowsiness, a local alert subsystem generates an audible, visual and/or vibration-based warning to the driver. An IoT communication subsystem additionally communicates information associated with the determined alertness condition and detected drowsiness event to a remote monitoring infrastructure for real- time monitoring, storage and analysis. The system thereby combines continuous in-vehicle driver-state monitoring, immediate local warning and IoT-enabled remote accessibility to provide a scalable driver safety solution for different vehicle applications.
