MUMBAI, India, July 24 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611064597 A) filed by Chandigarh University on May 22, 2026, for Dragonfly Inspired Quad Wing Flapping Mechanism With Dual Crank Gear Synchronization And Cable Guided Pitch Modulation.

Abstract: The present invention represents the design and structural architecture of a bio-inspired, four-wing flapping mechanism for micro aerial vehicles (MAVs). Utilizing a removable thorax cartridge, the system features a centralized drivetrain where a DC motor and pinion actuate synchronized, counter-rotating spur gears. This configuration converts rotary motion into symmetric 50° wing strokes at frequencies of 12-15 Hz via crank-rocker linkages. A modular interface allows for fore-hind wing indexing to optimize wake interactions, while passive pitch reversal is managed through tendon-guided modules, eliminating the need for heavy wing-tip servos. Constructed from lightweight carbon/bamboo spars and Mylar membranes, the mechanism supports stable hover for 150 g platforms. This integrated mechanical approach provides a robust framework for aerodynamic modelling and the advancement of agile, small- scale flapping-wing flight technology.
