Abstract: A door opening restriction system (100) for a road vehicle (102) includes a vehicle speed switch (108) configured to close when vehicle speed is zero; a seat occupancy sensor (118) configured to detect presence of an occupant; object detection sensors (120, 122) mounted on both lateral sides of the vehicle (102) and configured to detect objects (124) in proximity to the vehicle (102), the object detection sensors (120, 122) being enabled only after the seat occupancy sensor (118) detects occupant presence; a door actuator (132) imposes a door restriction on a door (104); an in-cabin alerting system (138) provides audible and visual alerts to occupants; and a control unit (126) that imposes the door restriction via the door actuator (132) while objects (124) are detected and releases the door restriction only when no object (124) is detected, the door restriction not being released upon elapse of a time period.
