Abstract: Data confidentiality in terms of protecting sensitive data from being compromised in case of its unauthorized recovery remains one of the main issues of the modern world in the context of ongoing advancements in digital technology and storage devices. Moreover, the variety of devices used for storing data, which include not only standard magnetic storage but also more complex NVMe and Self-Encrypting Drives, often requires manual involvement in the process of sanitizing that information in order to prevent possible misuse. Thus, special tools, including the developed DiskSanitizer project, should be employed in order to allow for hardware-aware data deletion and encryption. The aim of this research project is to deliver an extensive overview of the possibilities of automated low-level communication between storage devices and security protocols implementation in order to minimize risks associated with manual disk evaluation processes.
