The invention relates to a process for the preparation of novel achiral organic or inorganic salt of racemic desacetyl ketoconazole compound of formula (IV) from racemic desacetyl ketoconazole compound of formula (V) using achiral organic or inorganic acid and its direct resolution to chirally pure salt of desacetyl ketoconazole compound of formula (III). The present invention further relates to a conversion of chirally pure salt of desacetyl ketoconazole compound of formula (III) to levoketoconazole compound of formula (I) using novel achiral organic or inorganic salt of racemic desacetyl ketoconazole compound of formula (IV).
