The assay cartridges or systems optionally contain a sample analysis region to analyze the samples processed in the device. Assay cartridges comprise a first substrate having a first face comprising a pattern of grooves; a second substrate having a first face, wherein the first substrate is positioned in relation to the second substrate such that the first face of the first substrate faces the first face of the second substrate; and a first region and a second region, wherein the first and second regions are defined by the pattern of grooves and are located between the first and second substrates.
